What is Lab-Grown Diamond?

Lab-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic diamonds or cultured diamonds, are diamonds that are created in a laboratory rather than being mined from the Earth. These diamonds have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as natural diamonds, as they are made up of the same carbon crystal structure.

The process of creating lab-grown diamonds involves replicating the conditions found deep within the Earth's mantle, where natural diamonds are formed. High-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are the two main methods used to grow these diamonds.

In the HPHT method, a small diamond seed is placed in a chamber and subjected to intense heat and pressure. Carbon-rich gases are then introduced, allowing the carbon atoms to attach to the seed and gradually form a larger diamond crystal.

On the other hand, the CVD method involves placing a diamond seed in a vacuum chamber and introducing a mixture of hydrocarbon gases. These gases are then ionized, causing the carbon atoms to deposit and form layers on the seed, resulting in the growth of a diamond over time.
